Before you sit down: 6 prep steps that make your weave install smoother
If you want your hair salon weave to lay flat and last, prep matters. We generally recommend you come with hair that’s clean and fully detangled unless we’ve told you we’re washing you here. (We do have clients who love that we’re thorough about getting the hair really clean when washing is part of the appointment.)
- Bring 2 to 3 reference photos that match the curl pattern you want (deep wave, looser curls, more volume, or more definition).
- Know your non-negotiables: middle part or side part, leave-out or closure, natural color or a specific shade.
- Tell us about your scalp. If you’re sensitive or you can only handle gel or grease, say it up front. We’re used to adjusting and keeping things comfortable.
- Pack a satin scarf or bonnet so you’re protecting the style that same night.
- Wear something comfy at the neckline. A smooth hoodie or a crewneck tends to be easier than a tight collar when you’re in the chair for a few hours.
- Block the time. A first weave install is usually not a “squeeze it in” appointment, even if you’re coming from the Columbia Gateway / Dobbin Road area on a quick break.
Your first deep wave weave appointment, step-by-step (and what “normal” feels like)
When you arrive, we start with a short consultation. We’ll look at your natural hair density and talk through the finish you’re after. 1) We decide the install method and the plan
We’ll talk glue-in vs sew-in vs tape-in based on your goals, your lifestyle, and how long you want to wear it. 2) We prep your hair and build the foundation
This is where your style really starts. We’ll detangle, section, and create a clean base. Our team is big on neat parting and a solid foundation. 3) Installation time: plan 2 to 4+ hours depending on your look

We’ve had people call our process “relatively quick, ” and we’ve also had styles take close to five hours when the length and detail are the priority. We’ll talk timing honestly before we get deep into the install.
4) Comfort check: snug is normal, pain is not
Expect mild scalp sensitivity for about 24 to 72 hours, especially if you’re not used to protective styles. But you shouldn’t be miserable. We’re easy to talk to about adjustments, and we take that seriously. We’ve had clients say their scalp felt great and that their head didn’t hurt to the point they could wear a ponytail the same day. Right after your appointment, it’s normal to feel a little tight at the scalp. It usually settles fast. The bigger issue in Columbia summers is frizz and puffing, especially in hot, humid July weather. Deep wave can handle humidity beautifully, but you’ve got to protect the pattern.
We generally recommend:
- Sleep with a satin scarf/bonnet and gather curls loosely so you’re not crushing the pattern.
- Keep product simple. Too much heavy cream can make curly bundles look dull or sticky. Start light, then add more only if you need it.
- If you’re swimming, protect the hair from chlorine. A swim cap helps, and rinsing right after matters. Curly hair holds onto pool water.
- Ask us about a realistic wash timeline for your install type. Tape-in, sew-in, and glue-in don’t all behave the same.
